You've got a social life? You must not have children!

"Mom - I've got a playdate with Cameron" my son informs me today.
.
And I've got a playdate with Neeve" interrupts my daughter.
.
My son wants to go to his friend's house. My daughter wants to have her friend come over to our house.
I quickly do a mental check and try and remember if I've cleaned up the dishes from this morning... yup, all clear.
.
Phew.
.
Now I just gotta figure out a way to drop off my son and make it back to my place in time for my daughter's playdate. And then, of course, once that is over, race over to my son's friend and pick him up again.
.
Did I mention I need to make dinner but instead I'm running around like a chaffeur?
.
I spend more time making phone calls on behalf of my offspring, arranging and re-arranging playdates than any phone calls I make for my own social life.
.
In fact, my big calendar on the fridge is colourfully marked with all their activities (my daughter has Sparks and Art and my son has Karate twice a week) as well as playdates.
.
The other day I was trying to schedule some alone time for me and my husband, and I had to 'fit it in' between all the children's activities!!
.
Who knew 8 and 6 year olds could have a more active social life than their 35 year old parents?
.

My kids have way more of a social life than I have. In fact, my mother also has a great social life. I, however, don't have time or energy to see anyone. People ask me if I date. DATE? Never mind who I would date. WHEN would I date? I get the kids to daycare at 7:45am, work all day, pick them up around 5pm. Go home, make dinner, and all of the other stuff that mom's do. On top of that, I'm VP of the Board for the daycare, take an on-line course, go to AA at least 3 times a week, and then work even more from home.
We do the large colour-coded calendar as well, it's the only way to go.
Oh yeah, this is about YOU and your kids. Ooppsss.
Fact is, us parent's done have time for a social life. I'm glad I'm single, I don't have to stress about spending time with the spouse.
Good luck to you, you're going to need it!

Oh I hear 'ya! I spent hours trudging through the rain for a field trip of theirs today and then got stuck in a ditch. The things we do for our children!

I hate to tell you that it only gets worse. At nine, my son is ALL about the friends. I'm hoping that I'll get lucky this weekend and he'll be at friends' house instead of home. I've got a lot of painting and cleaning to get done!

Eileen - So you gotta be either a child or a senior citizen in order to have an active social life? Thanks for clarifying it for me :-)

Blonde - You poor thing, I can so picture it too! You're right, we do A LOT for these kids.

Sayre - I too have to clean the house this weekend, but I cannot imagine sending both of my kids to hang out at their friends house all weekend, that may borderline on cruel for their parents, haha.

Not having kids, and being some years removed from my childhood, I've always been a bit bemused by this kid social thing. When I was one, the scene was the kid across the street, the one behind our lot on the other street and the one on that street, but down the block.

You know Jeff and I have hardly any time alone now that I am working. Its hard but next month meaning Oct 18th to the 25th the girls are going to grandma's house. So nice with home schooling. They get a break and so do we...

But yes children seem to have active schedules dont they..

Been there, done that! Now my kids don't want me anywhere near their social lives! *bliss* Oh, in case you go looking, I've deleted my blog. I don't know when I'll be able to create a new blog, working 2 full-time jobs is kicking my butt. I'll still keep my e-mail though and check in on your site.

why am I not surprised? Although I'm sure I would like more quiet times in my weekends. Guess these little people are full on. My parents were lucky, I only ever made friends with the neighbours. Fingers crossed it will be the same for me in a couple of years.

what? a social life? well if you include all the years of chats with teachers, doctors and nurses and delivering boxes of fruit for the highschool band and sports games and parades and up all night long visist with kids who couldn't sleep and conversations about eating veggies and learning the new "MATH"...what the heck was wrong with the old math? LMAO

I guess my social life has been very full what with 6 kids and all of their friends and later mates and now the 8 grandkids and all their events...I have been very social.

Heck who really needs sleep or a massage or an adult conversation or a night dancing anyway.

Mostly I would not trade...still I can dream.

I'm in empathy with you Michelle.
